In a blow to HBO, the first four episodes of Season 5 of Game of Thrones leaked online a day before the show premiered around the world. According to TorrentFreak, the leaked episodes were first spotted on private torrent tracker IPT before making their way to public torrent trackers.
The leak is thought to have come from review copies sent to the press, with HBO stating, “Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of GAME of Thronesoriginated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them. We’re actively assessing how this breach occurred.”
The episodes leaked on torrent sites are only available in standard-definition, which may be the one SAVING grace, as dedicated fans will likely opt to watch in high-definition instead. Still, this is a mini disaster for HBO for obvious reasons, and for fans too, who now run the risk of seeing major spoilers posted online by people who have watched ahead.
While HBO failed to prevent GAME of Thrones from leaking, the U.S. television network successfully streamed the first episode of the show through its new HBO Now service. HBO Go viewers weren’t so lucky, with many reporting problems lasting until several hours after the premiere had ended on cable.
