NICKI MINAJ:

Nicki Minaj (Onika Tanya Minaj) is an American rapper and songwriter of Indo- Asian descent. Born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, Nicki attended Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School. She became the most chartered female rapper in the history of The Billboard Hot 100, with 44 appearances in 2013. A graduate of Singing & Acting who started off as a backup vocalist, Nicki worked with several artistes before dropping her first mix tape, Playtime is Over in 2007. Her follow up, Sucker Free, in 2008, earned her the Female Artist of The Year Award at the Underground Music Awards. Her third single, Beam Me Up Scotty received rave reviews from MTV and BTE. Minaj, who earned millions of dollars endorsing Pepsi, Adidas and MAC Cosmetics, was the first female artiste included in MTV’s annual Hottest MC list. She made her film debut in The Other Woman. Today she has four American Music awards and eight BET awards to her credit among others.

AMBER ROSE:

Until she bared all for a Louis Vuitton commercial featuring Lamont Coleman’s sneaker line, little was known of American model, Amber Rose (Amber Levonchuck Rose), recording artiste, actress and fashion designer. However, that career move proved fruitful as it served as the base of her modelling and music careers. Born in Pennsylvania, USA, Amber grew up in Southern Philadelphia. The poet and mother of one released her debut single, Fame, featuring Wiz Khalifa, in January 2012, and followed up with her second single in February of the same year. Rose got married to Wiz Khalifa two years after she broke up with her former guy, Kanye West, amid allegations of an affair with Kim Kardashian.

Amber has several awards and nominations to her credit including Young Star Award for Best Young Actress/Performance, courtesy, DayTime TV Series. Some of her film credits include School Dance, Master of The Mix and A Haunting, where she played Jessie among others.

…And the people’s verdict:

It’s Nicky –Arinze Emmanul, banker

Nicky has sexier curves but she did a lot of cosmetic surgery and implants to achieve that. I never heard that Rose did any such thing.

They should drop their rivalry

– Emilia Iwendi, project co-ordinator

What I don’t like about the duo is that they seem to be taking their rivalry too far. As women and friends, engaging in one beef or the other is inevitable. But overstretching it is definitely not advisable. I learnt that Nicky once barred her friends and colleagues from associating with or even talking to Amber Rose, and threatened to fight her wherever she spotted her. Why engage in such fierce rivalry? As celebrities and role models, they should learn to be more mature.

Amber Rose, baddest gal Catherine Onyemaechi, undergraduate

Amber Rose is the baddest gal in history yet. She is adorable, has a spectacular skin texture coupled with irresistible curves. Although a former striper, her comportment suggests nothing close to that fact. That is why I was among those that regretted her marriage breakup.

Close call Nze Gregory, businessman

Nicky’s latest music video, Anaconda, will inform your choice better. Meanwhile, Amber is rounded and equally curvy. So, it’s a close call really; but Kim Kardasian tops the chart.

Amber Rose is more endowed Toyosin Adeoye, undergraduate

For me, I prefer Amber Rose because she is more natural. She is also prettier than Nicky. But in terms of controversy, give it to Nicky Minaj. I think she always stirs dust to ensure she remains relevant.

They are sex goddesses!

– Banjo Sikirat, undergraduate

Amber Rose and Nicky Minaj represent the same thing as far as I am concerned. I can’t really spot any outstanding difference between them; they are sex goddesses.

Amber Rose looks un-kept

– Ndidi Orji, teacher

The only thing I don’t like about Amber is her hairstyle. Her hair mocks her; it makes her look somewhat un-kept and older than her real age; how about trying some long hair Amber?

Nicky Minaj, my role model

–Sonia Johnsons, wannabe rapper

I love everything about Nicky Minaj. She is my role model and I aspire to be like her. The music video of Anaconda is a masterpiece. She is better than Amber rose on all fronts. She has got more endorsements, won more awards and nominations and also has done more collaborations.

Amber is more beautiful – Sonia John, civil servant

I think that Amber rose is more beautiful than Nicky. She has better curves, better carriage and is taller too. Facially, you could look the way of Minaj but Amber has a wide edge over Nicki.

Give it to Nicki Minaj –Oni Badmus, marketing executive

When you talk about sexy curves, Nicky should carry the day. The only advantage Amber has over her is height. Apart from that, Nicky is sexier by all other standards you can think of.

This is digressional – Grace Peters, undergraduate

I find this edition digressional. Why are you deviating so soon? We saw this coming when you suddenly stopped playing up the piece on the cover of The Sun just after a few editions. If you have run out of ideas, you should throw it up to the public rather than promoting foreign artistes at the expense of our local artistes who will never be mentioned in the foreign media. Please make Nigeria and Africa the focus of Showdown.

Amber has better dress sense Dorcas Adegboye, systems analys

Judging from their dress sense, I would say that Amber rose is more mature than Nicky. She has better dress sense and has better carriage too; Nicky it would seem exhibits childish elements a lot.

Nicky Minaj is awesome! – Ruth Apeh, undergraduate

Nicky Minaj is an awesome star! Did you watch her perform Anaconda at the VMAs? She was amazing and virtually stole the show. She even out-shined Beyonce and Miley Cyrus; she is my numero uno; I prefer her to Amber.

If only Amber would change her hairdo Clara Adeseye, undergraduate

I adore Amber Rose a great deal but I detest her hairstyle. To me, she looks somewhat dirty. But apart from that she is a juicy damsel. But for her hairdo, there wouldn’t have been any basis to compare Nicky with her.

I’ll go for Nicky Minaj

– Agumba Tobias, businessman

I find Nicky Minaj curvier and more attractive. And if I were to spend a night with either of them, I would go for Minaj. She is more popular than Amber Rose as far as I am concerned. But to give Amber her due honour, I have to note that she is more advantaged in height.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – Dr. Peter Obendeh

To be realistic, both acts have huge fan bases. Minaj is popular and so too is Amber. But as for who has better curves, I would say the popular saying which has it that ‘beauty is on the eye of the beholder’ should come into play here. For instance, I prefer Nicky’s talent to Amber’s but when it comes to their physical beauty, it is the other way round. And I know a couple of my friends hold counter views.

It’s Amber Rose – Johnson Eberechukwu, importer

Amber Rose has natural curves while Nicky Minaj is too cosmetic.

Embrace local content

–Dom Ahiazu, social critic

My advice is that if you must feature foreign artists in this column, it should be as sparingly as possible so the column doesn’t lose its original idea and flavour. Based on my little knowledge about journalism and the emphasises on news relativity I want to ask, what percentage of the Nigerian public really know about Nicky Minaj and Amber Rose? Please try and embrace local content.
