Angel Di Maria beats Lionel Messi to Argentine Footballer Award

Despite scoring 47 goals more than Di Maria, Argentines choose United star ahead of Messi.

Argentine football community may have quickly forgotten their hero at the World Cup and the diaspora, Lionel Messi who has represented the country better than any other.

Having scored 57 goals for club and country in 2014 alone, being named MVP in the World Cup and breaking several goal records in the UEFA Champions League and La Liga, the 27 year-old lost out in the race for the best player in Argentina.

Angel Di Maria was chosen ahead of Messi who has won the award for the past six years, after Juan Sebastian Veron.

Di Maria’s winning records; his role in Madrid’s La Decima title win, his exploits at the World Cup and contributions to Manchester United since his British record fee of near £60m, persuades Argentinians more than the just 10 goals to his name this year.
