In the past, On-Air-Personalities (OAPs) were not commonly in the
public glare. Though some of them were popular, but the popularity was
majorly with their names and not faces. Back then, only presenters
working with television stations were well known to the people.
But
nowadays, some radio presenters are more famous than their television
counterparts. Most radio presenters now compete favourably with
celebrities and they now have celebrities’ status.
Names like
Toke Makinwa, Toolz, Freeze, Tossyn Bucknor and several others come into
minds of those who follow showbiz when OAPs are mentioned.
Apart
from the razzmatazz these OAPs are involved in, they amazingly go the
extra mile to inform, entertain and to educate their listeners with
their cool and unique voices.
Here are 10 top OAPs based in Lagos in no particular order.
Tolulope Oniru, aka Toolz: She is an amazing presenter with Beat
FM and has won some awards doing what she knows how to o best. The
‘weapon of mass destruction’ glued behind her body, on the lower end,
has continued to surprise many people. Apart from her WMD, Toolz is
talented and has interviewed several celebs.
Ifedayo Olarinde, also known as Freeze, hails from Osun State. He
works with Cool FM and has been in the broadcasting world for more than
a decade. Freeze has interviewed international acts like Boyz 2 Men,
Angie Stone, Akon, Brian McKnight, Sisquo, Joe, SWV, Brick and Lace,
Wycleff Jean, Caron Wheeler, Sean Paul, Kool and the Gang, Tuface Idibia
and Dbanj.
Steve Onu aka Yaw is an actor and comedian, who is doing well in
the broadcasting world. He anchors a popular morning show on Wazobia FM.
His programme is listened to by commercial drivers and executives, who
call into the show.
Toke Makinwa-Ayida, born on November 3, 1985, is a Nigerian
television and radio personality as well as a Vlogger. She is arguably
the most controversial OAPs in the country and is always in the news.
Toke, who also hosts public functions, was born in Abuja, but later
relocated to Lagos with her parents. She is a second child from a family
of four. Toke works with Rhythm FM.
Olisa Adibua, a top presenter with Beat FM, has also endured
negative news story about him. Few years ago, he was accused of causing a
bodily harm on a junior staff and was reportedly suspended from work by
his employers. He later returned to work after some days. He was also
in the news when he had issues with Obi Asika of Storm Records, where he
was a director.
Wana Wana is another OAP that is well known in the city of Lagos.
She has a first class degree in Journalism and works with Inspiration
FM. Her evening programme on radio is inspiring to many. Many stay glued
to their radio sets when her show starts. She is the founder of the
1k4cancer Initiative, which raises money to assist women from low income
families.
Jimmie Akinsola is a sport journalist and is loved for what he
does. His authority on issues relating to sports in Nigeria marvels some
of his listeners. Jimmie works with the Silverbird Group
Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi is an exciting OAP that is not always in
the news for the wrong reason. She works with Beat FM and her show is
tuned to by many radio listeners. She was once with Cool FM, where she
anchored week-day shows; Midday Oasis and Radio Graffiti.
Tosyn Bucknor is a multi-talented OAP. Apart from radio work she
does with Top Radio, she sings and writes. Tossyn studied Law, but found
love in broadcasting. Her morning show earned her the nickname, Area
Mama.
Godwin Aruayo is an OAP with Naija FM. He co-hosts a morning show
with Sabina, a gospel singer. His ‘Morning Runs with Godwin and Sabina’
has become a programme many anticipate every weekdays. Some have touted
him to be the next Yaw of Naija FM.
